A Paralympic cyclist who was injured in a hit-and-run while riding on the A48 near Bridgend has called on the government to address the issue of road safety for bike and motorcycle owners.

The athlete was knocked off his bike by the driver of a van and is in a critical condition - highlighting the importance of motorcycle helmets.

Simon Richardson, who won two Paralympic gold medals for cycling at the Beijing Olympics, was left with serious leg and back injuries.

A 59-year-old was arrested in connection with the incident and has subsequently been released on bail.

Recently, The Gear launched a study into the benefits of biker clothing - such as Shark helmets and Draggin jeans.

One of the people taking part in the study, James Strong, a former chief executive officer of Qantas, told of how he was left with broken bones after a motorcycle accident because he was not wearing the right protective gear.
