About CMC Chesterfield Ltd.

Isle of man TT

CMC supported David Jefferies at Isle of Man TT

CMC was established in 1975 when Maurice Feltham took his passion for riding and rebuilding motorcycles one step further by purchasing Staveley Motorcycles a small dealership at that time dealing with a mix of British and Japanese used bikes and parts.

As the business grew and moved to premises on Lowgates bridge on the main A632 in Staveley Maurice’s two older sons Ross and Mark took over the reigns and grew the business year on year moving premises again in 1993 to Storforth Lane, Chesterfield and changing the company name from Staveley Motorcycles to Chesterfield Motorcycle Centre (CMC) and adding the Yamaha franchise.CMC rapidly out grew this premises and re located to the Top Road Calow premises in 1996 where we remain to day.

During these very busy years of growth the family business added many more staff including another family member with youngest son Darren joining the team and CMC rapidly grew to be the largest retailer of new Yamaha’s from one outlet.

It was during 1999 CMC supported David Jefferies at the Isle of Man TT winning in 1999 and 2000 the TT Production race a feat that we are all very proud of, and to have had the opportunity to work with such a great rider and the winning the bikes are on display at our stores today.

During 1999 CMC was approached by a company named Bikes UK who were looking to purchase a large dealership in the Midlands to add to a further 15 stores thus making at that time the largest motorcycle group in the UK.

The idea of this company was to operate with family owned business’s and merge it with under performing dealerships which would benefit from working in a group with the expertise of well run dealerships and economies of scale that would benefit the group and its customers. This also gave CMC the chance to work with some very experienced people from motorcycling and other suppliers/manufactures on a scale we would never have experienced.

Unfortunately as motorcycling took a down turn this venture only lasted 18 months before it closed and CMC quickly re grouped buying back the store at Chesterfield and also the ex-Bikes-UK branches at Nottingham and Cannock and finally adding a totally new store in Sheffield in 2003.

So now CMC now operated four stores and continued were it left off becoming the largest retailer of new Yamaha’s in the UK and in 2004 became Motorcycle News Dealer of the Year for stores with more than one outlet and also our CMC website www.cmcbikes.com won the best new website award.

For 2006 we have reverted back to three stores as Frank Hayes who came on board as a director at CMC after Bikes UK in 2002 has took the plunge as Maurice did thirty one years ago and purchased our Sheffield store which completed on the 1st of June 06 and has become Sheffield Motorcycle Centre, we wish Frank and his team well for the future.

So what is ahead for CMC now? In some ways we have come full circle in six years from joining a large group in 2000 to working with four stores and an additional director to now being back wholly owned by the Feltham family. We have enjoyed our experiences over the last six years and now will take the lessons learned and mix these with what we know works best, look after the customer and the business will look after its self.

We have a great bunch of people working with us at Chesterfield, Nottingham and Cannock and for the immediate future we will be working with them and you to improve the level of service we provide ensuring that you return time after time.

Thank you for reading this brief history of CMC if you would like to help us provide a better service to you our customer please feel free to email me at any time with your suggestions.

We look forward to delivering your new motorcycle.
