The YZF-R1 is more closely linked to our MotoGP winning M1 than ever. Its innovative 998cc inline four-cylinder engine features a crossplane crankshaft with an uneven firing interval ensuring superb throttle linearity, giving a feeling that the rider's throttle hand is directly connected to the rear tyre.
The new engine feels and sounds smoother than ever, emittting an unforgettable exhaust note. Pushing out 182 PS and 115.5 Nm of torque, this MotoGP-inspired engine is the most advanced powerplant ever seen on a Yamaha supersport bike.
And for the ultimate in feel and controllability, the new R1 runs with an all-new Deltabox chassis offering an idealised rigidity balance.
The YZF-R1 has been a supersport legend for more then 10 years. The new YZF-R1 is the first production bike with a crossplane crankshaft, technology pioneered in MotoGP. Yamaha's racing expertise means the R1 also delivers a wonderful traction-feel, using a short-wheelbase and long swingarm frame developed from lessons learned in MotoGP.
The R1's revolutionary crossplane crankshaft, with a MotoGP-style firing interval, transforms the feeling of an inline-four supersport bike. The crossplane crankshaft produces 'combustion' rather than 'inertial' torque – the rider 'feels' the rear tyre. With a growling exhaust note, the engine feels and sounds smoother.
The R1's cutting-edge electronics perfectly complement the innovative engine. YCC-I (Yamaha Chip-Controlled Intake) adjusts the length of the four intake funnels for perfect intake performance across the rpm range. YCC-T (Yamaha Chip-Controlled Throttle) controls the throttle-valve opening for instantly responsive and smooth power.
The short wheelbase combined with the rigid lightweight die-cast aluminium Deltabox frame and long swingarm provides maximum traction feel, excellent drive force and superbly controllable steering.
Front and rear suspension is multi-adjustable, for riding style and for road/track conditions. The 43 mm front fork features independent left/right cushioning that offers improved damping performance and enables easier settings adjustment, according to rider preference.
The new R1's sculptured bodywork expresses the machine's radical, mass centralised design: this is a densely packaged motorcycle that produces awesomely concentrated performance. From its Cobra-eyed front end all the way to its short, upswept mufflers and 190/55R rear tyre, the R1 proves the designer's maxim: function is beauty.
